Staunton Main Street U.S.A. |
The goal of the Promotions Committee is to support Staunton Main Street, USA efforts by bringing people downtown.
To accomplish this goal, the Promotions Committee will focus on the following objectives:
1. Enhance special downtown events.
2. Create unique retail-oriented activities.
3. Market the downtown district.
4. Define the downtown market niche and target appropriate audiences.
5. Create campaigns to enhance the downtown image.
In the relatively short time the Main Street Program has been in existence, the Promotions Committee has made significant strides in accomplishing these objectives. For example, in May 2000, just one month following our town's official designation as a Main Street Community, the committee successfully hosted Staunton's first annual Heritage Day, an event which filled Main Street, from one end to the other, with music, pedestrians, displays, craft demonstrations, and good old-fashioned fun. In addition, art students from Staunton High School created drawings of our many distinct and historic buildings and displayed their artwork for all to enjoy.
As an adjunct to this event, the students' artistic renderings are being developed into note cards and other such items to raise funds in support of future Main Street activities.
The Promotions committee also planned and implemented the first ever "Bicycle Workshop for Kids" which was presented in June in conjunction with the increasingly popular Tour de Donut bicycle race. For this event, Staunton Police registered bicycles, the Cyclery of Edwardsville conducted minor bicycle repairs, and the IL Department of Health's Bicycle Safety Office provided bicycle safety helmets for sale at a special price. Members of the Staunton Main Street Program assisted the police with registration and manned the helmet booth.
Plans for the year 2001 include the 2nd annual Heritage Day, bigger and better than the first; and a Mini Tour de Donut/Bicycle Rodeo, greatly expanding the activities of our initial 'Workshop for Kids.;" and a brand new " Harvest Days 2001," which will feature local crafts and talents. In addition, the Promotions Committee will lend assistance to the organizers of Staunton's homecoming weekend, the Auto Show, the Street Fest in August, and the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk.
