The mission of the Staunton Main Street, USA program is to preserve, restore, and revitalize Staunton's downtown district, both aesthetically and economically, to ensure the community's economic growth and stability.

 The following goals will guide the activities of the Main Street program in accomplishing this mission:

 1. Promote the historic preservation, protection, and use of Staunton's traditional downtown area, including the area's commercial, civic, and religious enterprises and residences.

2. Take remedial actions to eliminate the physical, economic, and social deterioration of Staunton's traditional downtown area.

3. Develop and disseminate information aimed at promoting interest in the history, culture, architecture, preservation, and public use of Staunton's traditional downtown district.

4. Analyze Staunton's current economic status and develop vehicles to strengthen existing businesses, find new economic uses for Main Street properties, and recruit new businesses.

Staunton Main Street, USA has created a Board of Directors to over see the execution of these goals, and four committees (Promotions, Design, Organization, and Economic Restructuring) to perform the actions necessary to accomplish these goals. The Board of Directors and the committees are comprised entirely of volunteers from the community. A Main Street Program Manager works with the Board to coordinate the activities of the committees and to facilitate cooperation among Staunton's various civic and business groups.

 A corresponding slogan to capture the essence of Staunton Main Street's mission is: "Staunton - A Pleasant Blend of Innovation and Tradition."

 A depiction of the historic clock, presented to citizens of Staunton in 1921 by the Staunton National Bank, has been adopted as the program's official logo.
