Freedom of Information

The City of Staunton was incorporated as a village in 1859.

 

The city is governed under the Aldermanic-City form of government.  The City Council is comprised of eight aldermen and a mayor.  Aldermen are elected from each of the City's four wards to serve either two or four year terms.  The Mayor, City Treasurer, and City Clerk are elected at large to serve four-year terms.  The "Info" box on the left of this page links to our organizational chart and listing of the elected officials.

 

The City of Staunton has a total operating budget of $6,824,950 for the fiscal year 2009-2010, which began on May 1, 2009 and ends on April 30, 2010

MISSION AND PURPOSE STATEMENT

FOR THE

CITY OF STAUNTON, ILLINOIS

 

 

It is the mission of the Staunton City Council to ensure the betterment and security of the City and the general public. Through diligence and dedication, the values of fiscal prudence, public safety, a high quality of life, professionalism and inclusiveness will provide a sense of "belonging” we desire for the City of Staunton, Illinois.

 

This simple statement contains a great deal of meaning. It points to the need for engaging our citizens in an effort to create a true community feeling; a community where there is a “sense of belonging,” a place where there is trust and relationships among our citizens, and where people know their neighbors. Staunton is a place where citizens take the responsibility and accountability to partner with the City to achieve our mutual vision of a great community.

 

To carry out this purpose, the City government will follow core values to guide our day-to-day existence, and help us focus on our purpose:

                · Excellence: Passion to do our best for our citizens

                · Integrity: To do the right thing for our citizens

                · Service: We care and strive to make a difference

                · Creativity: Ensure the freedom to imagine and the courage to act

 

Staunton City government provides political direction and exercises control over the organization of the City. The City Council will make local laws that enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

The City will ensure the following for the betterment and security of the City and the general public:

                · Prudent use of City funds

                · Police service and protection

                · Water and sewer services

                · Roads, streets and alleys maintenance

· That public grounds, including parks and recreational area, are maintained

                · Positive and effective zoning ordinances

                · We hire employees that strive for professionalism and endeavor to serve the citizens

                · Strive for economic and land develop to enhance the prosperity of the City

                · A library to augment the educational experience

                · Support for organizations/groups/clubs that develop healthy and wholesome relationships

  with our citizens

· That we form committees and commissions dedicated to a quality of life for the citizenry

· We provide an open forum for citizens to express ideas, thoughts, and advice to the City.

 

REQUESTING INFORMATION

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is the principal Illinois Law governing the inspection of public records.  The law provides that any person can request in writing copies of public documents on a specific subject and the public body must provide those records unless those records are covered under one of the exemptions in the act.
