House Numbers Required
2/13/2012 12:00:00 AM
The Staunton City Council would like to remind residents that house and business address numbers must be prominently displayed. It has come to the council's attention that there are far too many addresses that do not have their number displayed at all. This is of great concern as proper display of an address aids in emergency response from the police, fire and ambulance services. Council members feel that safety is of the greatest concern, but the display of an address is also necessary for the postal service, other delivery businesses and utility companies working on outages or other matters of public safety.
There is an ordinance that requires that an address be properly displayed. Chapter 33, Article 8, Sections 1 & 2 cover this particular ordinance. Numbers are to be not less than 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide and plainly visible from the street the building faces. The council is urging voluntary compliance with this ordinance. Residents and property owners are asked to take a few moments to verify that address numbers are present as well as visible from the street.
